Matheen: MWSC focused on profitability after previous losses

Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed announced on Thursday evening that while water and sewerage services in Maldives had not been significantly profitable in the past, concerted efforts are now underway to ensure their commercial viability.
“Our goal is to turn profits with these services, in order to provide these services to the people sustainably so that they can benefit from it,” he stated, speaking on a PSM programme.
Matheen further elaborated that while the company has initiated billing customers in Kulhudhuffushi, the service has not yet achieved sufficient profitability, and it is not anticipated to do so in the near future. He noted a similar situation in Dhuvaafaru but added that work has now commenced to transform Dhuvaafaru into a commercially viable location.
Dhuvaafaru, which previously incurred a loss of MVR 10 million for MWSC, now boasts over 5,000 residents. Matheen confirmed that MWSC is now profiting from this increase in population.
According to Matheen, the primary objective of these services is to deliver positive outcomes and convenience to the public.
To further enhance services, MWSC launched a digital portal during the year. This portal has significantly streamlined the process of submitting applications remotely and online.
