The Drug Court has revealed that 18 percent of those who have been treated for drug addiction resume drug use.
The Maldives’ drug law was enacted and ratified on December 21, 2011, and the Drug Court was established under the Drug Act. According to statistics released by the Drug Court, more than 11,700 cases have been filed with the court since its establishment. Of these, 94 percent involved men. Three percent of the cases involved women and two percent involved minors.
Out of 5,148 individuals who completed drug treatment add received final verdicts, 946 cases have since been re-filed. However, 4,202 people, or 82 percent, have not returned to court post-treatment.
The Drug Court has so far ordered 2,389 people to serve prison sentences. 498 cases involve repeat offenders previously jailed by the court.
