The government has decided to relocate the residents of HDh. Hirimaradhoo to HDh. Hanimaadhoo, as confirmed by the Spokesperson of the President’s Office, Heena Waleed.
In a post on X, Heena stated that the decision was made in response to a request from Hirimaradhoo residents. However, she did not provide further details regarding the relocation process or timeline.
While this decision has now been announced, it is notable that in September 2023, the Hirimaradhoo Council met with the Ministry of Local Government and expressed the residents' preference to relocate to Thulusdhoo instead.
Hirimaradhoo is among the least populated islands in HDh. Atoll, with a population of 293 people, according to the 2022 census. Of these, 260 are Maldivians, while the registered population stands at 584.
The government has not yet provided additional information on the relocation process or the support measures for affected residents.
