Ex-CP Shujau honorably retires

Ali Shujau, who resigned from his post as the Commissioner of Police on Saturda,y has honorably retired from the police force.
Shujau’s resignation came amid mounting public pressure over the police investigation into the young woman’s fall, amid widespread suspicion of a potential cover-up.
The current administration’s first Commissioner of Police, Shujau, was appointed to the post on December 25, 2023. Shujau, who resigned on Saturday after 488 days as the Commissioner of Police has honorably retired from the police force.
Shujau had been involved in the education sector before he joined the police force. In this regard, he has worked as a teacher and assistant principal.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Faruhadh Fikury was initially named acting-Commissioner of Police following Shujau’s resignation. Less than an hour later, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen was appointed to the post.
Shujau and Naveen were the two candidates who vied for the Commissioner of Police position when the current administration first opened applications for the role.
Police have been subject to mass public scrutiny over their investigation into 21-year-old Mariyam Yumnu’s case.
Yumnu was found injured on the rooftop of a warehouse in the Henveiru district at around 07:30 am on April 18. According to the police, their investigation uncovered that she fell from a skylight on the ninth-floor stairwell of the adjacent building, H. Fentenoy, but that there was no evidence of foul play.
The case that has links to influential figures, including a cabinet minister and a diplomat has prompted serial protests from youths every night, demanding justice for the victim and a transparent investigation.
