British Airways resumes flights to Maldives

The only direct charter from London, England to the Maldives, British Airways halted flights on March 27, and resumed again last week. According to an official of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), British Airways’ flight schedule is on Saturdays, Mondays and Thursdays same as before. British Airways had announced last January that flights to the Maldives will come to a halt from March 27 and their new scheduled flights to the island nation will be only during winter. They added via email transfer that the airline adjusts their routes regularly based on customer demand. Winter in the United Kingdom and majority of European countries lasts from December to February. Travellers from the UK to the Maldives had drastically decreased by the time British Airlines halted their flights to the Maldives. However, Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) had said the numbers had been on a gradual rise since September. The UK takes up an average 7.5 percent in the Maldives’ tourism market. Last September, 68,519 UK tourists travelled to the Maldives, which is an increase of 2.9 percent from last year, according to MMPRC.
