Maldives ‘O’ Level Top 10 students and schools

Over 7,000 students from more than 200 schools sat the Cambridge GCE O’ Level (General Certificate of Education – Ordinary Level) examinations last year; 38 schools received awards for producing over 60 percent of students that passed in at least five subjects, while over 400 of these students made it to the ‘O’ Level National Top 10 awards. Below are the schools with the highest number of students in the Top 10 and the students who placed first in the awards. Historic Achievement for Aminiya School In the year 2013, the percentage of Aminiya students who passed the O’ Levels were 60 percent. However, last year the school has received a huge achievement undreamt of. The percentage of students who passed their examinations last year has increased to an astounding 80 percent. This is the greatest accomplishment for the school over the past five years. Aminiya’s Leading Teacher, Aminath Azza stated that the students worked extremely hard to improve the school results of the O Level examinations the previous year. The 229 students who sat the examinations had improved themselves by taking extra classes and participating in subject camps. Azza added that the teachers had also provided additional support for the students who scored a D grade and below on past exams. Aminiya students not only made up the bulk of the 1st place achievers, but also the majority who were placed in the O Level World Top 10. However, they posed more than a little rivalry for the old veteran schools. Over 150 Iskandhar students sat the examinations, of whom 26 percent made to the National Top 10. While the Iskandhar students at the National Top 10 amounted to 43 percent, four of them were placed 1st and nine of them received places in the World Top 10. “This is a great achievement. I am very pleased,” Principal Hussain Saeed said. Seventy-two percent of the Iskandhar students had passed in all their subjects. They have maintained their winning streak of producing the highest percentage of students that pass the O Level examinations. Their latest achievement of 94 percent students passing in five or more subjects is the highest results yet in the history of O Levels in Maldives. Principal Mohamed Rasheed said that from among the 224 students who sat the examinations last year, having nearly all of them score passes is an immense achievement. Thirty Ahmadhiyya students went to the National Top 10, amongst whom three were 1st place achievers. Additionally, four students were placed in the World Top 10. It also accommodates the greatest number of students in any school, thus producing varying O Level results over the years. However, the previous year brought much accomplishment to Majeedhiyya. A school official reported that 82 percent of the students who sat the examinations passed in five subjects, which is a 23 percent increase for the school. “This is such a great achievement,” the official said.
