Former Defense Minister Colonel (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim has paid a courtesy call on former President Mohamed Nasheed.
Nazim posted a tweet after the meeting held at the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s head office, writing that the two had a “very fruitful” discussion regarding the political situation.
Nazim, who played a leading role in overturning Nasheed’s Administration in 2012, wrote that it “was a pleasure to meet former President His Excellency Mohamed Nasheed”.
The Criminal Court sentenced Nazim to 11 years in prison on a weapon smuggling charge in March 2015 after police found a pistol in his apartment. His attorneys claimed that he was framed and jailed former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb’s DNA was later found on the weapon. The Supreme Court in early October suspended his prison conviction while he was in Malaysia on a medical leave.
The apex court had ordered authorities to refrain from enforcing their sentences until it completes its review of their cases. The Criminal Court on November 4th issued the stay order on his sentence given an ongoing review of the proceedings that led to their convictions.
