The Civil Court has on Thursday ordered ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) aligned lawmaker for south-Kulhudhuffushi constituency, Mohamed Nasheed to pay up USD 150,000 (MVR 2.3 million) to an Indian national.
Following the Civil Court ruling, the pro-government MP had declared that it was issued unlawfully and that he will be appealing the ruling at the High Court, mere hours after the ruling was issued.
Civil Court had on Thursday ruled against Nasheed after charges raised against him by Indian national Dr. Alaka Singh seeking reimbursement from him for the sale of a Maldivian diving cruise “Barutheela” which Singh invested in, at a significantly reduced price.
MP Nasheed has since refuted the claims against him.
However, the mail the MP sent to Singh clearly states that he believes he needs to take responsibility for selling the cruiser to a third party at such a reduced price. The court further stated that it is evident in their investigations that MP Nasheed had told Singh that he would reimburse the loss incurred in Singh’s investment in the cruiser.
Singh and Nasheed had reached an agreement to sell the cruiser to USD 400,000. However, Nasheed had sold the cruiser for USD 250,000. As such, presiding judge Mohamed Haleem ruled that documents prove Nasheed agreed to reimburse the USD 150,000 loss to Singh.
Mere hours after the ruling, a statement released by the lawmaker reads that the charges are not on the grounds of an unsettled debt, or about money that he owes to someone for the services the particular person provided to him. It further reads that the aforementioned mail was one that he sent offering to provide help to Singh as he had not gotten the amount he was after. The statement goes onto read that the mail is in no means, one that pins any responsibility or a reason for accusations to arise.
