Ex-MP Jabir to file case against restriction on candidates who lose political party primaries

Former MP Abdulla Jabir says he intends to file a case seeking to repeal a clause in the Political Parties Act which bars members who lose in primaries from contesting independently.
Jabir, who contested for the Kaashidhoo constituency in the Maldivian Democratic Party’s primary election held earlier this month, announced this through a tweet.
Jabir said in his tweet that he believes the clause is unconstitutional and should be repealed, adding that does ‘not want any resident of Kaashidhoo to despair’.
Jumhooree Party aligned MP Abdul Latheef Moosa has also submitted a motion to repeal the clause, which was in committee review when the People’s Majlis went into recess.
The Majlis revised the Political Parties Act in 2016, which was proposed by MP Saud Hussain and passed with 41 votes in favour.
