A State Electric Company (Stelco) oil pipe carrying fuel to the electric turbines in Male’ was damaged Saturday night, causing oil to leak into the sea.
Stelco said that mitigation measures were promptly taken to minimize the impact of the oil spill on the environment. Temporary measures have stopped the leak and protection sheets have been placed in the sea to prevent the oil from spreading. Special equipment is currently being used to clean up the spill, Stelco said.
Stelco assured it will take every step to ensure that such an incident is not be repeated, and said that the company considers it its utmost responsibility to protect the public and environment from hazards that might arise from such incidents.
