No truth to cases against President Nasheed: Home Minister Afeef

Speaking at a press conference at the Maldives Police Service Head Quarters today, Afeef said that the only cases that had not been investigated are cases that had no truth to them and the cases which are deemed legitimate would be investigated. Afeef also said that Nasheed had not claimed that islands are disappearing beneath the ocean, referring to a case against Nasheed which was highlighted by the members of the press. When the press inquired about the case filed by Umar Naseer accusing President Nasheed of “encouraging the use of narcotics” Afeef chose to address the inquiry with another question. “Is there any truth to anything Umar Naseer says?” he asked the press. The press also posed the question that the legitimacy or truth behind a case filed by the opposition can only be determined after an investigation, Afeef replied that the cases had no truth to them and that is as “clear as day”. While opposition members repeatedly accuse President Nasheed of making false claims, the police summoned the Vice President of Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP) Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed and DQP council member Ahmed Ibrahim “Sandhaanu Ahammaidhy” Didi after a case was filed by the government over similar accusations. With regard to the two DQP members case, Afeef said that they had accused the government of being anti-Islamic and actions against Islam is a serious offence under constitutional law and thus needed a prompt investigation. Though the Home Minister has declared that there is no truth to the cases against President Nasheed, Police have yet to comment on the matter.
