Tourism Minister, Housing Minister not under investigation: ACC

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), on Wednesday, confirmed to the Parliament that it was not conducting investigations against Minister of Tourism Ali Waheedh and Minister of Housing and Urban Development Aminath Athif.
In a letter sent to Parliament Speaker Gasim Ibrahim by ACC President Hassan Latheef, the graft watchdog retracted their previous claim, stating that the commission had investigations had concluded there was no evidence of corruption on March 10, 2016.
The commission also affirmed that Minister Athifa was not undergoing investigations over charges of corruption and that she did not hold any such criminal records.
The issue first surfaced after ACC submitted documents to the Parliament's Accountability Committee during the review process, prior to backing the ministerial appointments.
Minister Waheedh was accused of corruption over crossing floors from Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) to the ruling party at the time, Maldives Democratic Party. Following the shift on May 20, 2011, Ali Waheedh served as an MDP chairperson. He is currently a member of the Jumhooree Party (JP).
Minister Athifa was accused of corruption over her appointment as the Housing Ministry's Project Manager when she was also a consultant for Vilma Construction, a company that managed several state-run housing projects following the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004.
The Parliament had approved the appointment of all cabinet ministers, including that of Minister Athifa and Minister Waheed, on December 3.
