A second inmate died on Monday while serving his sentence, the Maldives Correctional Service has confirmed.
The latest death was that of Hassan Niyaz, 45, from S. Hithadhoo, who was incarcerated at Hulhumale' Prison. According to Corrections, he suffered a sudden medical emergency on Monday afternoon and was taken to Hulhumale' Hospital at 13:30. Doctors later informed authorities that he died at 14:05.
Corrections said the police, his family, the Inspector of Correctional Service, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, and the National Integrity Commission were immediately notified.
This marks the second inmate death reported on Monday. Earlier in the day, Ibrahim Suhail, 53, from Male', died at 09:05 after a week of treatment at IGMH. He had been hospitalized with pneumonia.
Deaths of inmates serving sentences remain relatively rare, according to Corrections.
