The administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has seen a significant public response to its housing initiatives, with the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure reporting that over 9,600 applications have been formalised to date.
Ministry officials confirmed that 9,645 individuals have successfully submitted their applications. The data underscores a pronounced preference for urban apartment living; 5,993 applicants are seeking flats, while 3,234 individuals have requested residential plots of land.
The overarching family housing programme has emerged as the principal driver of this interest, accounting for 9,227 of the total submissions. A further 418 applications were filed under the specialised "Goathi Gedhoru" programme, which allows individuals to apply even if a spouse already possesses adequate housing. Beyond these completed submissions, a massive wave of pending interest remains in the system, with 13,279 forms currently in the draft stage.
Efforts to broaden the scope of social support are set to intensify on 1 April, when the government introduces two new categories under the "Gedhoruveriyaa" programme. Operating under the comprehensive "Boahiyaavahikan Emmenah" policy, these initiatives will include a dedicated category for individuals with disabilities.
The upcoming expansion is also designed to rectify issues stemming from previous land schemes. It offers a pathway for families who were awarded joint land allocations under the prior administration to transition into separate, individual plots. The new rules also accommodate those previously disqualified from the "Binveriyaa" land programme due to their ownership of government social housing flats.
Applications for these new categories will open at the start of next month, with all currently active housing schemes slated to remain open for submissions until the end of April. To ensure equitable access, the ministry has categorised applications to accommodate both native residents of Malé and those from other islands currently domiciled in the capital. All submissions must be processed exclusively through the government’s centralised housing portal.
