Construction has commenced on the upgrading of Dr Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital in Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll to tertiary level.
The project is being carried out by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The project includes the construction of a 102-bed hospital building on an area of 87,455 square metres. The project, valued at USD 9.37 million, is scheduled for completion within 540 days.
Thinadhoo has a population of over 10,000 and serves as a regional hub, with many people travelling there daily for healthcare. The expansion will improve access to healthcare services and allow residents to receive more treatments locally. This is expected to bring significant relief to people in the island and surrounding atolls while eliminating the need to travel to other islands.
In addition to the commencement of construction, works for the establishment of MRI services and installation of a hyperbaric oxygen chamber were also officially inaugurated.
