President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu states the final list of flat recipients under the former administration’s ‘Gedhoruveriya’ housing scheme will be publicized on Thursday.
The President visited Dh. Hulhudheli on Tuesday as part of his ongoing tour of Dhaalu Atoll.
Speaking during a community meeting with the residents of the island, President Muizzu referred back to his presidential address during the inaugural sitting of the Parliament this year during which he had stated that the government would publish the final list of flat recipients before Ramadan.
With the first of Ramadan set to fall on Saturday as per the calendar, the President announced that the government is planning to publish the list on Thursday.
“We have arranged to publish the list after a press conference which will be held by the Housing Ministry on Thursday. All the details of citizens who applied for these 4,000 flats will be included in the list,” he said.
As per the President, these details will include information such as the reason why they have not received the flat in a very transparent manner.
“During that day’s press conference, the Minister will also detail the course of action to those who have been disqualified such as opportunities to submit complaints,” he added.
Citing resolving the shortage of housing as the most important pledge he has made, the President affirmed the pledge will be fulfilled in both Male’ area and atolls.
The 4,000 units are being developed in Hulhumale’ Phase II by the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC). It is the first of housing units being built under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme, a social housing project launched by the former administration.
The list of recipients of the flats, which was released during the last days of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) administration, was the subject of an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The corruption watchdog ordered for the suspension of the issuance of flats, before finally giving the Housing Ministry the go-ahead to proceed in February 2024.
The Housing Ministry has been reviewing the list for the past year. Despite providing multiple dates to publish the list, the Ministry has failed to deliver.
