Chief Justice Abdul Ghani Mohamed has said that passing the bar exam with a law degree is not the final milestone for lawyers, but rather the beginning of a demanding professional journey.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony for newly licensed lawyers held at the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) on Sunday, the Chief Justice urged legal professionals to embrace their responsibilities with humility and dedication.
“Some people think that with a law degree and passing the bar exam, it’s over. No, that’s not right. It’s just the beginning,” he said.
He stressed that lawyers, like judges, are essential partners in the pursuit of justice. “Lawyers are also part of the journey of justice. We all have a huge responsibility to ensure that rights are restored to their rightful owners,” he added.
The Chief Justice also called for collaboration between judges and lawyers, emphasizing that both must work in the same direction to uphold justice and public trust.
The ceremony was attended by Bar Council officials, judges, and legal educators. Nineteen new lawyers were sworn in by High Court Judge Hassan Shafeeu, bringing the total number of registered lawyers in the Maldives to 1,919.
