Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee Mohamed has emphasised that lawyers must play a key role in assisting judges to ensure the fair administration of justice.
The Chief Justice made the remarks while speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of lawyers held by the Bar Council.
In his address, the Chief Justice stated that every lawyer acts as a guarantor of the rights of those they represent, and therefore, it is crucial to provide judges with accurate and honest information.
The Chief Justice also offered guidance for lawyers aspiring to succeed in their profession, and highlighted the importance of specialising in a specific field and conducting research in that particular area.
"The first step is to dive into legal knowledge, narrow down the field of law and specialise in a field that interests you the most. Study that field deeply. If you attempt to cover all areas, you will not be prepared adequately for the work,” he advised.
The Chief Justice further stressed that lawyers should develop key skills such as concise summary presentation and listening skills. He encouraged taking on pro bono cases to assist those who cannot afford legal representation.
At the ceremony, nineteen new lawyers were sworn in by High Court Judge Hassan Shafeeu, bringing the total number of lawyers on the Bar Council’s register to 1,919.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Bar Council officials, court judges and lecturers involved in legal education and training.
