Moms Aid has launched a series of activities to mark the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which began on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
This year’s global theme is “Unite to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls,” highlighting the growing threat of online harm faced by women and girls.
As part of the campaign, a free self-defense workshop titled “Strong Women: Safe Women” will be held this Friday evening at The Wellness Club in Male'. The event is open to women only and will run from 20:30 to 22:30.
The workshop is being organized in collaboration with the Maldives Police Service, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), Wellness Club, and the Association for Women Empowerment (SHE). It aims to raise awareness about gender-based violence, teach practical safety skills, and build confidence through community support.
Moms Aid said the workshop has received strong public interest and registration will remain open until the evening of the event.
In addition to the workshop, the association has planned a GBV awareness quiz night on December 2. The event will feature competitive team-based rounds in a fun setting to promote understanding of different forms of violence.
A fee of MVR 200 will be charged per team of four, and registration will open next week. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. The quiz night is being held in partnership with SHE and the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM).
Moms Aid will also host an online webinar focused on identifying types of violence, prevention strategies, and available support services in the Maldives.
Throughout the 16 Days campaign, the association will run a digital awareness initiative across its social media platforms, emphasizing that violence against women and girls, whether online or offline, is a serious issue that demands collective action.
“We stand with survivors, advocates, families, and communities. We believe in a future where every woman and girl is safe, respected, and free,” Moms Aid said.
