History Will Remember Maldives' Generosity Towards Sri Lanka, Says High Commissioner

In a powerful testament to regional solidarity, Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to the Maldives, Mohamed Rizvi Hassen, has declared that the assistance provided by the Maldivian people during his country's crisis will be “written in golden letters in history.”
The heartfelt statement was made during a telethon organised by Public Service Media (PSM) and Maldivian media outlets, which has raised significant funds for Sri Lanka's recovery efforts following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
The High Commissioner, visibly moved, expressed his profound gratitude, noting that the nationwide effort to help a neighbour exemplifies the deep and enduring relationship between the two Indian Ocean nations.
"The entire country working together to help a neighbouring country shows the close relationship between the two countries and this will be written in the history of the two countries," he said.
The High Commissioner confessed he was previously unfamiliar with the concept of a telethon and was brought to tears by the outpouring of support it generated. He emphasised that while the financial contribution from a nation with a small population like the Maldives might seem modest to some, its symbolic value and practical impact are immense for the people of Sri Lanka.
The funds raised, which according to the latest figures exceed USD 757,040, are earmarked for critical recovery efforts. High Commissioner Rizvi confirmed the donations would be channeled into rebuilding essential infrastructure, including roads and buildings, and reviving agricultural fields. Beyond the financial aid, he stressed that the greatest importance lies in the powerful message of solidarity, adding that this courage assures Sri Lankans that the Maldives will stand with them in any future challenges.
The event has not only provided crucial aid for Sri Lanka's rebuilding process but has also significantly strengthened the bilateral bonds, with the High Commissioner vowing that these stories of generosity will be passed down through generations of Sri Lankans. Those wishing to contribute further can do so through the Sri Lankan High Commission in Male’, he added.
Echoing the Ambassador's sentiments, Maldives’ Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusan hailed the national initiative as an exemplary model for the international community.
He highlighted the deep people-to-people connections, noting the many Sri Lankan teachers and accountants working in the Maldives. He praised the collaborative efforts of various government agencies and the media, stating that the telethon brilliantly showcased the humanity and compassion of the Maldivian people.
