Parliament raises monthly allowance for former Vice Presidents to MVR 30,000

The Parliament has on Monday approved an increase in monthly allowances for Vice Presidents who have completed their term, raising the amount from MVR 25,000 to MVR 30,000.
The amendment was proposed by Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid, who noted that while former Presidents receive substantial financial benefits and state security, Vice Presidents have historically been excluded from such entitlements.
Shahid’s proposal initially set the allowance at MVR 25,000, but the amount was raised to MVR 30,000 during debate. The amendment passed unanimously with the support of all 68 members present.
Under the new provision, a former Vice President is eligible for the allowance only if they have completed a full five-year term in office and have not been convicted of any criminal offense.
This makes Faisal Naseem, who served as Vice President under the previous MDP administration, the sole beneficiary of the new allowance.
Former president Faisal Naseem (C) in Fuvahmulah City to campaign for local council elections.
Other former Vice Presidents do not meet the criteria:
Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan became President after Nasheed’s resignation and did not complete five years as Vice President.
Mohamed Waheed Deen, Waheed’s deputy, served for two years.
Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, the first Vice President under President Yameen, did not complete a full term.
Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor, Yameen’s second Vice President, served briefly and was later convicted of criminal offenses.
Abdulla Jihad, Yameen’s third Vice President, also served for a short period.
Faisal Naseem remains the only Vice President to have completed a full five-year term under the current constitution without controversy or criminal conviction.
Shahid’s amendment also includes a separate provision to deduct MVR 175,000 per month from the state budget for former Presidents to operate official offices.
