The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, in collaboration with Kinolhas Council of Raa Atoll, is preparing to launch a commercial poultry farming programme in Kinolhas.
The Commercial Poultry Farming Programme is part of the government’s efforts to ensure food security in the Maldives. When the project was opened for proposals, the Kinolhas Council submitted the strongest proposal, and an agreement has now been signed between the Council and the Ministry to implement the project on the island.
Speaking to PSM News regarding the programme, Kinolhas Council President Ahmed Hussain said the island has a long history of poultry farming, with residents raising chickens for many years. He noted that poultry farming is included in the island’s development plans, with 20,000 square feet of land allocated for the purpose in its land-use plan. With 18 resorts located nearby, the supply of locally produced eggs would be highly beneficial, he said.
The commercial poultry farming programme in Kinolhas is expected to commence in December.
