The Maldives Qualification Authority (MQA) plays a crucial role in ensuring the standards of institutions providing higher education across the country, according to Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed, Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development. He made the remarks at the authority’s silver jubilee ceremony, underscoring its essential function in safeguarding integrity and advancing quality within the country’s higher education sector.
Over the past 25 years, the MQA has overseen the expansion and consolidation of the nation’s higher education network. Its work has included compiling the National Qualifications Framework, accrediting courses, and conducting institutional audits, measures that Minister Haidar said have ensured the quality of higher education and secured global acceptance for Maldivian institutions.
The minister also pointed to the broader impact of the authority’s efforts, noting that its operations empower institutions to raise standards, encourage creativity, and produce individuals equipped for the demands of the workplace.
“The most significant advantage derived from the work of the MQA is the resultant capacity to elevate the standards of institutions, foster innovation, and ultimately produce individuals who are fully prepared for the professional workplace,” Minister Haidar said. He added that this strengthening of the higher education system aligns with the national agenda, a priority to which President Dr Mohamed Muizzu attaches special importance.
The ceremony also honoured individuals and organisations that have contributed to the authority’s progress. Commemorative certificates were presented to recognise those who have assisted and supported the MQA in various capacities over the years.
The Maldives Qualification Authority was established by presidential decree on 14 August 2000 under the name Maldives Accreditation Board. It adopted its current designation on 17 May 2010, reflecting its broadened mandate and evolving role in the nation’s higher education system.
