Road Development Corporation (RDC) was awarded a project valued MVR 102.8 million which entails laying asphalt on the roads of HA. Ihavandhoo.
The agreement pertaining to the project was signed during a special ceremony held at the Planning Ministry on Sunday. Director General Fathimath Shaana Farooq signed the agreement on behalf of Planning Ministry while Chief Financial Officer Yasir Hassan signed on behalf of RDC.
The project was contracted to be completed within 540 days. Its scope includes laying asphalt in 6.9-kilometer roads, building storm drainage and installation of streetlights.

Ihavandhoo Council member Ahmed Rilwan told Sun that the present condition of the island’s roads was a pressing concern for its residents as they pose abundance of difficulties for motorists and pedestrians.
“Because of the increased potholes across the island, they need to be filled with sand every other three months. This poses many difficulties to both motorists and pedestrians,” he noted.
Rilwan detailed that the council has been filling potholes with sand for almost four years now; a temporary solution that is not particularly well-received among Ihavandhoo residents.
Ihavandhoo, which is the Haa Alifu Atoll island with the second largest population, is frequented by many for business purposes. The condition of the roads on the island, however, makes things pose difficulties to persons vising for such purposes.
Underscoring that laying asphalt on Ihavandhoo roads is a pertinent request of its residents – Rilwan said the present condition of the island’s roads has dispirited the people.
He also assured the government that the council would provide full cooperation for projects pledged for the island by the administration. However, he stressed the concern of Ihavandhoo residents is the delays in these projects.
Ihavandhoo has a population of over 3,600 people.
