Former President Mohamed Nasheed proclaimed that main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s victory of achieving the Local Council Elections under the compression and influence imposed by the government is the greatest strength demonstrated by Maldivians in the nation’s political history.
Speaking to Mihaaru, Nasheed stated that it is a great achievement for opposition parties as they faced the election with several challenges and obstructions from the government.
Currently in Sri Lanka, Nasheed added that people voting to give the prominent majority of City Councils and majority of Atoll and Island Councils to MDP is an act of clear refusal against the administration of incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
Nasheed further called upon President Yameen to give an immediate response to the complaints of the public. He stressed that arrested and jailed political leaders should be released at once and that arrangements should be made to enable peaceful political activities without any further excuses.
He also highlighted that the public has witnessed the murder of lawmaker Dr Afrasheem Ali, abduction of journalist Ahmed Rilwan and murder of blogger Yameen Rasheed by the election and urged a fast response to the concerns of the public.
