Kulhudhuffushi City Council has announced that a memorial dedicated to Martyr Corporal Hussain Adam will be officially unveiled on Victory Day, November 3, 2025. The monument honours his sacrifice during the 1988 coup attempt and will be installed in a roundabout in the former port area of the city.
The memorial’s main feature is a seven-foot-high replica of the AK-47 rifle used by Hussain Adam during the attack. Pillars flanking the gate will mirror the bullet-hole patterns found at the scene where he was martyred. The landscaping includes green and red trees, with the monument’s floor painted white as part of the symbolic design.
The project has been funded with MVR 9,00,000 from the City Council’s budget. All construction is complete except for the nameplate of the monument. The unveiling ceremony will be led by Hussain Adam’s family.
Corporal Hussain Adam was a 19-year-old soldier from Kulhudhuffushi who died defending the main gate of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) headquarters during the coup attempt on November 3, 1988. He is widely celebrated as one of the nation’s heroes.
The monument is part of ongoing Victory Day commemorations and serves as a lasting tribute to the bravery of Maldives’ defenders.
