Two Maldivian families have been provided with assistance from a flooded area in Sri Lanka, High Commissioner of Maldives to Sri Lanka Masood Imad said on Sunday.
The High Commissioner shared the latest information on the rains in the country during the ongoing telethon Ceylon aa eku Dhivehin. He said rains have now subsided, but the Sri Lankan government has warned that rivers are expected to flood in the coming days.
Masood confirmed that the two Maldivian families living in a flooded area have been relocated to a hotel. He did not specify the number of people in the families or whether children were included. He added that if any Maldivian requires assistance, transportation is being provided immediately.
The High Commissioner also cautioned that there may be serious difficulties in transit to Colombo Airport, advising Maldivians to avoid transit travel if possible. He urged Maldivians in Sri Lanka to call the embassy hotline for support: 09476991666.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka continues to face severe impacts from Cyclone Ditwah. According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), at least 159 people have been confirmed dead, with over 200 missing. More than 78,000 people have been displaced, and 20,000 homes damaged. A state of emergency has been declared, and international aid has begun arriving.
Floodwaters remain high in parts of Colombo, especially along the Kelani River, which has overflowed its banks. Authorities warn that conditions may worsen as upstream rains continue to feed rivers. Nearly a third of the country is without electricity or running water, and transport links remain severely disrupted.
Many Maldivian media outlets have launched a telethon to help Sri Lanka. Sun Siyam Media is participating, with results broadcast on Sun Online and SSTV.
