The owner of the tugboat that ran aground on Milandhoo reef, Singaporean company Gloha Maritime Private Limited, has been fined MVR 12,006,200.00 (Twelve Million Six Thousand Two Hundred Maldivian Rufiyaa).
This was disclosed in a press statement released tonight by the Environmental Regulatory Authority (ERA).
The ERA stated that the tugboat named “Shwe Lin Yone,” registered in the Republic of Niue and operating in the Maldives under the agency of Atoll Navigation Services Private Limited, ran aground on the reef of Sh. Milandhoo on October 3, 2024.
Following the refloating of the vessel from the reef on October 19, 2024, a joint survey was conducted on November 7 and 8, 2024, with surveyors appointed by the vessel’s owner, to assess the damage caused to the reef.
The survey revealed that a significant area of 477 square meters of the reef where the vessel ran aground sustained major damage, resulting in the destruction of the reef.
Consequently, Gloha Maritime Private Limited has been fined MVR 12,006,200.00 (Twelve Million Six Thousand Two Hundred Maldivian Rufiyaa) for the environmental damage to the reef, under the Regulation on Fines and Compensation for Environmental Damage, which is established under the Maldivian Environmental Protection and Preservation Act. The ERA has informed the company of this decision.
The company has also been instructed to pay the fine to the ERA within 30 days of the notification date, which is November 19, 2025.
