Housing ministry has leased a land plot in capital Male’s east waterfront prone to swells for the development of a café.
The ministry’s spokesperson Ahmed Fazal said the plot, situated in Alimas Carnival in Henveiru ward, was leased last July for a period of one and half years, according to a statement by the ministry.
“The land was handed over to the company that submitted the best proposal. It’s a local company,” he said, not revealing the name of the firm.
The land plot leased for the café is the region most prone to swells during certain seasons. Swells have caused minor landslides and littered the region with pieces of rocks and corals in the past.
The plot is beside the old Lily’s Café, which was closed down a year ago following damages sustained during a major swell. However, rumours have been abound of Lily’s owner planning to develop a more quality restaurant in that plot again.
Housing ministry had also issued a notice ordering evacuation of the cafes in the south of Alimas Carnival to clear land for the pending development of King Salman mosque, a project undertaken with Saudi Arabia’s free aid. However, the southern cafes are still ongoing and evacuation is yet commence.
