Minister of Tourism, Thoriq Ibrahim has stated that 1,290 new tourism beds are expected to be launched across the Maldives before the end of this year.
Speaking to reporters at the President's Office on Wednesday, Minister Thoriq said 156 tourism-related facilities are currently under development across the Maldives. However, work on 61 sites has been delayed for various reasons, he noted, adding that efforts are underway to resume those projects.
The minister also shared information on the properties allocated for tourism through closed bidding and cross subsidies since President Dr Mohamed Muizzu took office in November 2023.
“Ten sites have been awarded for tourism under closed bidding while three sites have been awarded under cross-subsidy. Three sites have been announced under open bidding," he said.
Thoriq said efforts are underway to achieve the government's target of attracting 2.3 million tourists this year.
“The marketing activities are being intensified during the low tourism season and throughout the year,” Thorig said.
According to tourism statistics, about 1,500 new tourism beds were launched last year.
