A 32 year old Maldivian man who became victim to a barracuda attack while on a dive to take sea cucumbers has been airlifted to India, where he received treatment at Amrita Hospital.
Indian newspapers report that the man was initially treated in Maldives, but was later transferred to India for further treatment due to the severity of his injuries.
Citing doctors at Amrita Hospital, the reports state that the barracuda had penetrated his spinal cord, with fragments of the fish's teeth also embedded there. This has led to paralysis in his left arm and leg.
The man has since undergone surgery, and is now recovering in the ward.
Although there have been some reports of barracuda attacks previously as well, the fish is not known to generally attack divers.
