The Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) has stated that the Elections Commission of the Maldives (EC) dissolved the party and removed it from the political parties registry unlawfully.
EC dissolved MRM on 29 January as per the Political Parties Act, citing that the party had failed to increase its membership to the required 3,000-member threshold during the duration extended to increase its membership.
In a letter addressed to EC by MRM President Ahmed Faris Maumoon, he referenced a parliamentary report indicating that two former members of ECM and a current member had attempted to prevent MRM’s membership from reaching 3,000 members. While ECM members have been dismissed from the commission due to the matter, the letter urged the commission to investigate the commission’s actions against the MRM and act in accordance with the law.
