The national carrier of the Maldives, Maldivian, has formally appointed MEGACAP Aviation Services Limited as its General Sales Agent in China, a strategic move intended to fortify air travel connectivity between the two nations as the island nation’s most vital source market continues to expand. To service this critical route, Maldivian currently deploys wide-body A330-200 aircraft. These dedicated flights, which commenced in January 2025, have already precipitated a demonstrably positive influx of Chinese tourists to the country.
The Chinese demographic remains a foremost priority within the airline’s broader international network, Ibrahim Iyas, the Managing Director of Maldivian, maintained while addressing the appointment. The selection of MEGACAP, Iyas noted, unequivocally underscores the profound significance the carrier attributes to the region. Through the partnership with this organisation, the airline anticipates cementing robust commercial ties, he said, adding that the collaboration would facilitate greater opportunities for an increased number of Chinese travellers to experience the Maldives.
Looking ahead, the airline expects that MEGACAP’s industry expertise will be instrumental in cultivating cooperative relationships with key stakeholders across the Chinese tourism sector. This engagement is projected to elevate the airline’s brand prominence and drive further sustained growth.
China continues to be an indispensable source market for the broader Maldivian tourism industry, according to the latest official statistical figures. Last year, the Maldives welcomed 329,110 Chinese visitors, reflecting a 25 percent year-over-year increase. As of mid-March, 86,464 tourists from China have arrived, capturing an expanded 15.6 percent share of the total market.
