The Housing Development Corporation on Sunday broke ground on a sports park in Phase I of Hulhumalé, addressing a chronic shortage of play areas for local children. The ceremony was led by the corporation’s managing director, Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Ali Zuhair, alongside parliamentary representatives Abdulla Shazeem of Central Hulhumalé and Hussain Shareef of North Hulhumalé.
Located opposite the Container Park, the facility is scheduled for completion within four months. The hub will feature an artificial turf futsal pitch and a three-on-three basketball court, integrated alongside an existing community volleyball court. Officials said the design aims to bolster established recreational habits rather than replace them.
The project follows a grievance from a local resident regarding the lack of safe spaces in the area. In a gesture of civic recognition, the corporation invited the resident to help lay the foundation stone. The initiative reflects a strategic priority to expand sports infrastructure across the Hulhumalé region, the corporation said.
