President announces expansion of ambulance services under Aasandha from 1 April

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the expansion of ambulance services covered under the Aasandha scheme to include additional medical circumstances, effective from 1 April 2026. He made the announcement at a press briefing held at the President's Office today.
The President stated that the revised policy introduces new categories of coverage, including transport for bedridden patients, wheelchair users, and persons with disabilities (including those with physical disabilities, mental disabilities, autism, and Down syndrome) to access outpatient services. The expanded coverage will also include patient transfers between health centres for further treatment or specialised referrals, as well as transport to jetties or airports for medical evacuations or overseas treatment.
In addition, the policy extends coverage to individuals living with thalassaemia requiring outpatient care. Existing provisions for emergency medical transport and the transportation of deceased persons will continue under the scheme.
The President noted that the decision responds to longstanding public requests for greater accessibility, and that the expansion was finalised following consultations with relevant stakeholders and a thorough assessment of its technical and financial feasibility to ensure sustainable implementation.
