In the press conference held for the Maldivian media yesterday during his official visit to India, President further said that in addition to the accords made between the two governments, all other agreements made with various Indian parties would be upheld by the Maldives. “I assured the Indian government that there were no causes for concern regarding such agreements made between the two countries. In addition I informed that it is only recently that Maldives began working with large foreign corporations, and hence Maldives has not much experience in dealing with large companies. That’s why we are currently trying to iron out some of these issues through mutual dialogue,” President Waheed said in response to question in relation to the recent strife with Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) operator GMR, India. He revealed that the Indian government has been informed of the establishment of a committee comprising of the Finance Minister, Attorney General and Chairman of the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) to resolve the issues with GMR. President Waheed also said that the Indian government was with the government of Maldives and revealed that senior officials of the Indian government had given their assurance that the Indian government’s assistance and support to the Maldives would always continue unaffected. Further, the President said that he had briefed the Indian officials on the economic status of the Maldives, during his meetings with them, and also said that the Indian government would provide financial assistance to overcome the budgetary challenges of the Maldives. In addition to the budgetary support, President said that the USD40 million from Exim Bank to the Maldives for the housing project would be received soon. “Hence I believe that a considerable amount in aid has been secured as a result of this visit. As you are aware, India has backed us financially at a time when the Maldives is facing such an economic downturn,” he added.
