Ex-MP files case to disqualify Thasmeen from Majlis
Civil Court had ordered Thasmeen who is the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) leader and running mate of President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik to pay back a loan of MVR1.9 million taken from Deputy Parliament Speaker Ahmed Nazim. Thasmeen had also lost the appeal after the High Court in April had upheld the two-year-old Civil Court ruling. Speaking to reporters outside the Supreme Court after filing the case, Musthafa reiterated that even if Thasmeen settles his debt now it would not mean he had paid back the loan to MP Nazim as provided in the judgment as nearly two months had lapsed since the High Court rejected his appeal. According to Musthafa who himself lost his seat over a decreed debt last year said the Supreme Court must pass a judgment on Thasmeen’s parliamentary seat. It is yet to be confirmed if the highest court of the Maldives has accepted the case. Nazim had sought the unsettled MVR1.92 million out of the US$200,000 (MVR2.55 million) taken as a loan by Thasmen and another MVR100,000 incurred as legal fees. The case was filed at the Civil Court on December 29, 2010 while the verdict was delivered on April 21, 2011. Thasmeen had appealed the Civil Court verdict at the High Court on June 9, 2011. In addition to his parliament seat, Thasmeen will also fail to meet the qualifications of a VP if he has an undischarged decreed debt as enshrined in the constitution. “Not only the VP post, as things stand Thasmeen cannot be a MP or even the president,” Musthafa said.
