Charges in Judge Abdulla's case is against President Nasheed: PG

Police had forwarded the case of the illegal detention of Judge Abdulla in Kaafu Atoll Girifushi military training facility for 22 days to the PG office earlier today. An official of the PG office revealed that the charges had been filed against "Galolhu Canereege, Mohamed Nasheed" and no other person had been included in the case. PG office is currently assessing the case, official said. "We will make a decision with regard to the case without much delay," official added. Police media official said that the case had been handed over to the PG’s office after taking the statements from all the relevant parties. Police had earlier requested a statement from Nasheed in relation to the matter, but had later decided to move forward with the investigation without Nasheed’s statement after he had refused to give one. After refusing to cooperate with the police, Nasheed had told the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) that the decision to isolate Judge Abdulla Mohamed in Girifushi was made by the Defence Ministry and he did not have any involvement in the matter. Former Defence Minister Tholhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu had claimed that former Police Commissioner Ahmed Faseeh and former Home Minister Hassan Afeef had requested to isolate the Judge as he was a threat to national security. When Afeef had been questioned by the police in relation to the matter, he revealed that he had asked the military to take action against Judge Abdulla upon receiving a request from the Police citing that the Judge was a threat to national security. HRCM had taken the statements in relation to their investigation into the detention of the Criminal Court’s Chief Judge and had revealed that the findings of the probe would be announced soon.
