Motion to remove Gasim from JSC taken off agenda

The removal of the motion came after opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) during the session on Monday had pressed for a secret ballot in no-confidence motions by raising points of order. Parliament was prematurely adjourned on Monday without taking a vote on the no-confidence motions filed against Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim and Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed over the same issue. Speaker Abdulla Shahid announced the end of the session after MDP threatened to stymie the no-confidence vote against the two ministers unless the vote was taken through a secret ballot. Supreme Court had earlier declared the amendment to take secret votes in no-confidence motions as null and void as it was against the constitution. MDP MPs were adamant that despite the Supreme Court’s ruling, the vote on no-confidence motions must be taken through a secret ballot. Monday’s session was ended after the Speaker decided to send the issue with the Supreme Court ‘s verdict to the parliament’s general committee.
