A training program has been held to ensure that the ships docked at the Maldives comply with international standards and treaties which the Maldives is a member of.
The training which started on August 5th lasted for 5 days and was participated by Iran, Oman and Mauritius in addition to Maldives. The program was conducted by Indian Ocean Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control and by the Transport Authority of Maldives.
Speaking about the program, the State Minister of Economic Ministry Captain Abdul Latheef Mohammed said that, even though ships travel with all the required certificates sometimes problems do arise. He said that some problems occur even after the ships leave port.
He further said that, something might happen even while the ship is docked at the port and in cases like this most of the damage will be incurred by the port. He added that, that is why ships should be checked carefully to see whether they comply with the standards.
Abdul Latheef said that, even before ships are checked to see whether they comply with the international conventions, but that this training program will be an added experience for those involved in the process.
