"Will urge the US government to pressure Maldives on Nasheed release" – Amal Clooney

The United States of America will be appealed to put pressure on the Maldives، with regards to an immediate release on ex-President Mohamed Nasheed، who is serving 13 years in prison on terrorism charges، says the member of international lawyers representing Nasheed، Amal Clooney.
Amal Clooney appeared before reporters at the National Press Club on Thursday، accompanied by Laila Ali، the wife of President Nasheed and stated that she will not rest until the release of former President Mohamed Nasheed.
She had called on an immediate release of the former President Mohamed Nasheed.
Highlighting that human rights record of Maldives is going down day by day، Amal stated that the government of President Yamene are undertaking many efforts to ‘mute’ the opposition and anyone who can challenge them. The verdict on President Nasheed is an example، Amal added.
“The verdict was pre-planned and it was evident from the trial itself. As the lawyers of the President Nasheed، we will not rest until President Nasheed is released” stated Amal.
Laila Ali had officially filed a case in UN’s Working Group on Arbitrary Detention، to state the 13 year prison sentence on Nasheed as invalid and against international laws.
