Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on Tuesday, 21 September, officially inaugurated the Community Urban Farming Project in Hulhumale’.
Furthermore, the project was inaugurated by Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Dr. Hussain Rasheed while the Japanese Ambassador in Maldives and the UNDP’s Resident Representative to the country participated in the inauguration as well.
The project is executed as part of the sustainable economic employment for the development of MSMC while the project covers a total area of 19,877.26 square-feet, broken down into 16 plots which have been handed over to the selected candidates.
Moreover, the 16 plots have been distributed to 16 groups with each group consisting of 3 individuals. These groups have been distributed into 3 categories which include women/youths, people with disabilities and other persons.
HDC’s Community Urban Farming Project is an initiative that aims to raise the awareness among individuals towards farming and familiarizing them to the concepts.
In addition to this, the ministry as well as BCC and Agronat have conducted training and awareness programs focused on the project participants.
This is the first of its kind project carried jointly by both HDC and UNDP while the participants will not be charged with any rent on the plots for the initial 3 months. Additionally, they will be provided with allowances to ensure the project is feasible.
