Nasheed’s Attorneys allowed to observe May 6 attack trial

The Criminal Court of the Maldives has given attorneys representing Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed permission to observe the court hearings on the May 6 terrorist attack.
Speaker Nasheed’s attorney and younger brother Nazim Sattar requested the court to allow him to observe the trial, as Nasheed was the target of the terrorist attack that occurred on May 6, 2021. In addition, Nazim requested that attorneys Fathuhullah Ali and Ahmed Niyaz be allowed to act as observers, as they are working closely with him on the case. He also requested that British Queen's Counsel (QC) Kirsty Brimelow be given permission as well. Nasheed appointed Brimelow in 2021 to examine the criminal investigation into the attack.
Speaker Nasheed was severely injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attached to a motorcycle was triggered while he was getting in his car on the night of May 6, 2021. The attack left Nasheed with serious injuries, requiring multiple life-saving surgeries at ADK Hospital in Male’ and additional medical treatment in Germany and the UK.
The Criminal Court is conducting hearings for 10 suspects who were charged over the attack. Meanwhile, Ahmed Adhuham Rasheed has received a 23-year prison sentence after confessing to triggering the IED.
