Maldives signs UN Convention on the Elimination of Cybercrime

The Maldives has officially signed the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of Cybercrime, marking a significant step in the country’s commitment to strengthening cybersecurity and combating online crimes.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Khaleel signed the convention on behalf of the Maldives during the Cybercrime Conference held in Hanoi, Vietnam. The United Nations has encouraged all member states to join the treaty to promote international cooperation in addressing cyber threats and ensuring digital safety.
In a post on social media following the signing, Minister Khaleel described the decision as a “historic milestone” for the Maldives, noting that the government remains dedicated to building a secure and resilient digital environment. He added that the Maldives would continue to take necessary measures to prevent and combat cybercrime effectively.
The Maldives’ decision to join the convention was approved by the People’s Majlis on October 15. Authorities have since urged the public to remain vigilant online and to adopt stronger cybersecurity practices to reduce the risk of cyberattacks and online fraud.
