Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has described Feydhoo’s decision to remain under Addu City Council as a wise one, while expressing hope that Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo will prosper independently following their decision to separate.
In Saturday’s referendum, Feydhoo voted against forming a separate council, while Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo voted in favor of establishing independent island councils.
Reacting to the outcome, Fayyaz said Feydhoo had made a “wise decision” and added that he hoped the people of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo would now see greater development through self-governance.
A resounding and wise decision by the citizens of Feydhoo. Congratulations. You have recognized that a unified Addu represents the most sensible and promising path for your collective future. I also extend my best wishes to Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo. May both islands continue to…

Following the vote, Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar also welcomed the outcome, describing the separation of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo as a bereavement. He emphasized that the result would not affect the relationship between communities and called for unity in Addu’s development.
The Elections Commission announced provisional results on Saturday evening:
Feydhoo: 616 voted for separation, 1,784 voted against
Meedhoo: 847 voted for separation, 144 voted against
Hulhudhoo: 623 voted for separation, 329 voted against
A total of 4,493 people voted in the referendum, 47 percent of the 9,576 eligible voters.
It is noteworthy that less than two-thirds of the eligible population participated, indicating a relatively low turnout for a vote of this significance.
Fayyaz: Feydhoo made a wise decision, hope Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo thrive independently
