A joint operation by Maldives Police and Immigration authorities in Male' City has led to the arrest of 66 foreigners suspected of living and working in the country illegally.
The operation was carried out on Wednesday evening in the Karanka Road area and surrounding streets, where a large number of foreigners are reportedly engaged in business activities. Immigration officials said the task force checked 347 individuals and detained 66 for immigration violations.
Police confirmed the operation was part of a coordinated effort to identify and deport foreigners residing in the Maldives without valid visas. “Such efforts are essential to ensure the safety and security of our community, and to maintain social stability and economic health,” the police said in a statement.
Immigration officials noted a growing trend of foreigners misusing open visas, working outside their registered employment or running independent businesses. The government has pledged to resolve the issue of irregular immigration within the first three years of its term.
