President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that stalled development projects across the atolls will be reassigned to new contractors, with existing agreements terminated in a manner that avoids financial loss to the state.
The announcement was made during his visit to Feevah in Shaviyani Atoll as part of his ongoing tour of the atolls.
The President specifically addressed the halted waste management projects, which were previously contracted to a private company under the former administration. He stated that the government has been working for several days to terminate those contracts and will soon reassign the projects to ensure progress resumes in approximately 20 islands, including Feevah.
“We have been working on the [contract] termination for several days now. Hopefully, without further delay, the project handover will be done to about 20 islands in the north,” President Muizzu said.

He emphasized that all project reassignments are being conducted within legal frameworks, ensuring that the state is not exposed to additional financial risk. The move is part of a broader effort to accelerate development and fulfill pledges made in the President’s annual address, which included a commitment to establish waste management systems in every inhabited island by the end of 2025.
Earlier this year, the Ministry of Environment awarded contracts to develop or upgrade waste management infrastructure in 109 islands, but several projects have since stalled due to administrative delays and contractor performance issues. The reassignment strategy aims to revive these initiatives and maintain momentum in the government’s island-level infrastructure agenda.
During his visit to Feevah, President Muizzu also inaugurated new development projects, including a fitness and recreation center, a new school building, and a police station, while pledging to upgrade the island’s health center to 24-hour service. He assured residents that if progress on the health center does not advance within two weeks, the contract will also be reassigned.
