Kendhikulhudhoo Rebrands as ‘The Mangrove Island’ to Strengthen Local Tourism

Kendhikulhudhoo in Noonu Atoll has officially rebranded as ‘The Mangrove Island’ as part of a strategic initiative by the island council to position it as a premier local tourism destination. This branding effort, according to the council, marks the beginning of extensive promotional campaigns aimed at attracting visitors.
The move aligns with the government's broader focus on expanding local tourism by highlighting the unique geographical and natural attributes of Maldivian islands. During a visit to Kendhikulhudhoo on 29 February 2024, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced plans for an eco-tourism project to capitalize on the island’s distinct environmental features. He emphasized that the initiative would create economic opportunities for the island’s residents, enabling them to generate income while preserving their home environment.
Island Council President Hassan Mohamed confirmed to PSM News that promotional efforts under ‘The Mangrove Island’ branding have already commenced, including a presentation at the ongoing Internationale Tourismus-Börse (ITB) Berlin 2025. The island has also secured permits for homestay services, and construction is underway for luxury villas with 70 rooms and a 70-bed city hotel, part of which is expected to open by the end of this year.
Mohamed highlighted that 70% of job opportunities created by the city hotel and villas will be allocated to local residents, with a particular focus on employing women. He noted that many young people from Kendhikulhudhoo currently work in tourist resorts away from home, and the new hospitality projects will allow them to return and work within their community.
Kendhikulhudhoo is home to one of the largest mangrove forests in the Maldives, comprising nine distinct mangrove areas. Three of these mangroves span between 400 feet to 3,000 feet, creating a rich ecosystem that supports diverse bird and fish species. The island’s fertile soil further enhances its lush natural landscape, making it an ideal setting for eco-tourism development.
With the rebranding and ongoing tourism projects, Kendhikulhudhoo aims to establish itself as a key destination for travelers seeking nature-driven experiences in the Maldives.
