Minister Saeed Urges Private Sector to Keep Prices Affordable During Ramadan

Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has appealed to private businesses to maintain affordable prices for essential goods during the upcoming Ramadan, urging cooperation with the Government’s efforts to ensure fair pricing for consumers.
In a statement on the 'Roadha Thayyaaru' programme aired on state media on the evening of 1 March 2025, Minister Saeed outlined the Government's preparations for the holy month and emphasized the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors.
The Minister highlighted that some businesses, including a major fruit and vegetable retailer, have already committed to price reductions. He encouraged other businesses to follow suit and prioritize the public’s well-being over profit during this period. "We appeal to the private sector to work with us to keep essential goods affordable for the public," he said, noting that the country is recovering from a difficult economic crisis.
Minister Saeed further assured the public that the Government would step in to prevent shortages of essential goods during Ramadan, arranging for imports by air or sea if necessary. The State Trading Organisation (STO) has already initiated large-scale imports of essential products, including staple foodstuffs, fresh fruits and vegetables, processed foods, and cooking supplies, with a pledge to sell these items at reasonable prices throughout the month.
The Minister also mentioned that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is closely overseeing these efforts to ensure that consumers have access to sufficient supplies at stable prices.
