President Muizzu Announces Establishment of Public Defenders Office to Strengthen Justice System

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to establish a Public Defenders Office, aimed at providing legal representation for individuals unable to afford a lawyer in criminal cases. The initiative, set to launch this year, is part of broader efforts to strengthen the criminal justice system.
Delivering his Presidential Address, President Muizzu stated that a special bill to formalize the establishment of the Public Defenders Office will be submitted to Parliament this year. He emphasized that ensuring access to legal aid is critical for a fair justice system, aligning the Maldives with global democratic standards where public defenders assist accused individuals in criminal proceedings.
Beyond legal aid, the President addressed systemic challenges in the judiciary, particularly delays in hearings and verdicts. To expedite case proceedings, he outlined key measures, including:
- Commencement of the Superior Court Complex construction in Hulhumalé this year, to provide adequate space for court operations.
- Relocation of the Criminal Court and Drug Court to more spacious buildings, with completion targeted for August 2024, allowing for faster case processing and addressing prolonged remand periods.
Additionally, President Muizzu announced judicial reforms to enhance public confidence in the judiciary, including improvements to the Department of Judicial Administration and the introduction of specialized courts to expedite case resolution in specific legal areas.
The reforms reflect the administration’s commitment to ensuring a more efficient, transparent, and accessible justice system for all Maldivians.
